I wonder if a protocol is still a meaningful standard. Our thinking is that the key to this magic is the data-store, rather than some tricky wire protocol. If you have a highly-concurrent, change-aware database (like CouchDB) the protocol and the data store can be the same thing: JSON+HTTP.
